This Side Up｜天地無用

This Side Up continues the artist’s exploration of objects coded as
innocent. Its title references a Japanese shipping label, 天地無用 —
commonly “Do not invert,” literally “Heaven and Earth must not be
reversed.” The phrase functions as both practical instruction and social
assertion, marking the boundary between public handling and private
interiority.

Childhood artifacts, bathing rituals, hands, and stitched textiles
act as material signifiers, tracing how surfaces, fibers, and
inscriptions produce meaning through care, handling, and preservation.

Sashiko operates as inscription rather than repair: repetitive
gestures render textiles archival, stabilizing while preserving traces
of rupture. This Side Up｜天地無用 interrogates hierarchies embedded in acts
of protection, framing fragility as a condition generated within systems
of containment rather than an innate deficit.
